A recent stuff article about sexting has been brought to my attention.
Sexting is essentially taking, and then sending erotic or sexual images via pxt.
Various groups in the U.K. are expressing concerns as to the dangers of this, namely that previously private adolescent sexual exploration is fast entering the public domain, with damaging ramifications for individuals who are subsequently teased and bullied. Young women report that boyfriends are taking posed pictures of them and then sending these images to others without permission.
Sexual bullying is beyond my area of expertise but I was recently asked to provide some advice for one young woman. This woman enjoys her boyfriend taking sexy pxts of her but is worried that the pictures might find their way to her peer group. When I inquired further, she said she felt she needed to know him longer in order to completely trust him with images of her.
I suggested that if she felt it was fun to create her own erotica she simply make sure that she is in control of the hardware. She can use her own phone or digital camera and then they can look at it together.
Young men and especially young women can reduce the risk of their images slipping into cyberspace and still play with the excitement of making sexy images. However, they need to be either in possession of the only copy of a digital image or able to fully trust the person or persons they share these images with. They can find out more at netsafe.org.nz
